Ran into a problem recently.

My website is mainly running XML feeds. I have several that run feeds but this one is having problems. The host of the site isn't very much help. They tell me they can't host my site if this continues. I don't blame them.

Here is the information they gave me that shows the server overload:

Quote
Hello,

Server overload:

top - 13:35:56 up 11 days, 4:26, 1 user, load average: 1.97, 1.83, 1.75
Tasks: 234 total, 2 running, 230 sleeping, 0 stopped, 2 zombie
Cpu(s): 4.3%us, 10.0%sy, 3.5%ni, 82.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 16345608k total, 16050916k used, 294692k free, 520144k buffers
Swap: 33553400k total, 184k used, 33553216k free, 14056908k cached

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
15638 ******** 35 10 142m 24m 7876 R 99.9 0.2 155:30.16 php
3440 mysql 15 0 456m 122m 5304 S 1.3 0.8 760:16.28 mysqld

It wasn't related to any visitor (traffic was 0 during overload). It's about broken / misconfigured php script which getting stuck for hours.

I asked which script and this is their reply:

Quote
Hello,

Here is the script:

******** ********.com 99.7 /usr/bin/php -f /home/********/public_html/cron/cron.php
******** ********.com 99.6 /usr/bin/php -f /home/********/public_html/cron/cron.php

I replaced the usernames and domain name with ******** obviously.

Anybody know what all of this means and how do I fix it?

Thanks
Steve

It depends on the factor that feeds can take time to import, as the feeds that you are running are from remote website and the remote website may delay it or after importing the feeds inserting them into database can also cause some issues, the import script needs to be re-coded so that it manages delays properly without eating up the cpu.

Can anyone refer me to a reliable and helpful host that provides reseller accounts?

Please, no affiliate links either. I won't use them.

I'm gonna dump my host that is hosting this jobsite. They are turning out to be a bit difficult. They are telling me they can't discuss closed/resolved help tickets AFTER they quote something I wrote that was in a closed/resolved help ticket. That, to me, is a redflag that my host is run by juveniles.

hostgator.com and asmallorange.com are some of good hosts.
